Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy & Counselling Explained.
Hypnosis is the natural relaxing state half way between being awake and being asleep.
We go into a “hypnotic trance” many times during the day, where our minds wander, before coming back to the present. At night when we are in bed drifting off to sleep……. that is hypnosis – a reduced state of awareness. We just don’t realise it!!
Hypnosis has been around for many many years hundreds of years and thrives, not only as a therapy in it’s own right, but with the mind and body philosophies incorporated in yoga, mindfulness and meditation.
Hypnotherapy is a fully authenticated stand alone therapy, which works at the subconscious or historical level. Recognised by the medical profession as a natural and effective way of helping to deal with physical and psychological problems that occur in our daily lives, hypnotherapy gives us access to our subconscious.
Counselling or Talking Therapy are also stand alone therapies, whilst sometimes being used in conjunction with Hypnotherapy.
We don’t have access to our subconscious most of the time, spending the majority of our days in a conscious state, but it’s the place a bit like a junk room, where we store all the historical “stuff” from years gone by.
This “stuff” can become too much and our subconscious storage facility too full if issues haven’t been processed, or from general daily overload of wear and tear on our psyches.
I tend to think of it as our brain being a big filing cabinet (the subconscious), which is filled with all the pictures, sounds, smells, feelings and memories of things we’ve touched, tasted and accumulated (the junk room “stuff”) in our subconscious “filing cabinet” since we were born – historical.
We use our conscious brain for our everyday lives and it is the brain we make all our daily decisions with, but when we have a problem in our lives, it tends to be triggered by something buried in our subconscious (historical) “filing cabinet”, or “store room”.
Very briefly, to be able to deal with whatever issue has arisen, we need to carefully take a look at the historical or subconscious “filing cabinet” to find and retrieve the file that is causing the problem. We then have a “read” through the file, reframe or re-work the file using either Talking Therapy / Counselling or Hypnotherapy – or a combination – so that it reads more clearly. We might even decide that if the historical event is of no continued use to us, to let it go completely.
Whatever the problem or issue may be, we can work with it in and safe way.
Therapy is not without its bumps in the road, but using Counselling / Talking Therapy or Hypnotherapy, are effective ways of taking action that is both positive and hugely beneficial in your life.
Scientific research shows that negative emotions lower immunity and cause metabolic changes, which have a negative effect on our nervous system and body as a whole.
- The sympathetic nervous system – situated in the right hemisphere of the brain, is where negative thoughts and emotions occur.
- The parasympathetic nervous system – situated in the left hemisphere of the brain, is where positive thoughts occur.
Therefore any long term stressor, anxiety or some form of tension may cause disruption to the sympathetic nervous system.
Counselling, Talking Therapy and or Hypnotherapy works in bringing the parasympathetic nervous system into play, aiding in the relaxation, healing and long term wellbeing of the mind and body.
Working with historical problems held the subconscious and engaging the parasympathetic nervous system during a therapy session, has the supplemental positive effect of cellular immunity, muscle, respiratory and cardiac relaxation and blood vessel dilation. This aids in giving you the mental and physical relaxation to create the positive changes you desire, restoring the energetic balance within.
Clients find working with Counselling / Talking Therapy and or Hypnotherapy to be safe, relaxing and approachable therapies, allowing us to get to the root cause of problems.
Know that when we work together at my clinic in West Sussex with either Counselling / Talking Therapy and or Hypnotherapy, the subconscious will not do anything, or make any changes it doesn’t want to.
So you as the client really do have complete control of your therapy, as well as the control over the positive changes you decide make.
